Marnie is a character appearing in Pokémon Sword and Shield. She is a rival, and later succeeds her older brother's title as Gym Leader. She is also the idol of Team Yell. Marnie is a slim young girl with emerald-green eyes, dark-black hair, and very pale skin. Her hair is mostly short and flat, matching her head's shape. At the back of her neck, her hair becomes thinner and forms two pointed ends. Marnie has a peculiar hairstyle, with three right frontal bangs reaching her right eye's top; a partially shaved front left and back, illustrating three sharp lower teeth and four interlocked claws respectively; two small weakly inward-curved horns of hair with centermost horns larger on each of left and right; and below, messy twintails which separate into two locks at her ears' top, one small and neck reaching and one large and shoulder reaching, and terminate in bends toward her neck's back. Each set of horns and twintails is secured with a crimson ribbon. For clothing, Marnie wears an outfit that seems to be a mix of a tough and cute style. It consists of a studded black leather Gothic jacket—waist length with knuckle-length sleeves—featuring a long outward folded collar extending to the breasts' lowest point with six curved edges each containing one circular silver stud on their center; instantly below the collar at the right, five vertically joined diamond-shaped silver studs reaching the jacket's lower end; at each of the jacket's lower left and right, one black decorative bow supported by a black strap with its compact edges remodeled into small simple silver crowns with three outward facing edges; and, on the sleeves, from the jacket's to the sleeves' lower end altitudes, a descending pattern of one short vertical silver line and one sideways diamond-shaped silver stud, ceasing at the fourth line's end; underneath the jacket, a pink fabric mini-dress which assumes a heart shape at the top, appropriating both breasts, whose hem ends in eight equally wide inverted semicircles, with one inverted triangular hole cut above each upper vertex; and at her feet, matching black leather high-heeled boots, each with a pointed silver heel, a pink sole, a diagonally upward-pointing toe, a raised cuff, and a black strap amidst the foot region decorated with three equidistant studs, one on each of the far left and right sides, and one at its center. Marnie also carries a small crimson leather backpack which matches her hair ribbons, with two shoulder straps, a silver bow with a crimson center modeled after the jacket's bows at the top, and a black diamond at the lower center, touched on each of its sides by crimson straps containing two circular silver studs each, with each stud on the center of one black leather circle underneath the straps. For accessories, she wears a black leather choker around her neck with a frontal silver ring suspended by a small vertical bar of silver, with the ring possessing three equidistant outward spikes, along with a small diamond-shaped crimson piercing on her left ear, false eyelashes, and black matte nail polish.
After Marnie becomes a Gym Leader, she wears a uniform instead of her normal clothes. Her uniform consists of a pink and black midriff-baring tank top with Team Yell's symbol on it, matching black and pink skin-tight leggings with some rips and the number 960 on them, and black and brown shoes. She also wears a single glove with the same color as her shoes and has a Gym tattoo on her arm. When Marnie is battled by the player character in the Champion Cup, she can be seen wearing the same uniform that all Trainers undergoing the Gym Challenge wear: a white shirt, white shorts, white socks with a black stripe at the tops, and white shoes. Contrary to her tough-looking appearance, Marnie is a sweet, slightly shy girl that normally hides her soft side and emotions behind a veneer of calm. Likewise, she is normally a calculated and composed strategist who mostly hides her competitiveness in battle, but will still compete fairly with sportsmanship. She is sometimes annoyed by her wild fans, but as long as they do not bother others, she actually appreciates their support. Although she is generally emotionless on the surface, Marnie can stay angry for a long period if her limits have been tested. She also has a difficult time expressing happiness. However, since Morpeko is Marnie's partner and best friend, she sometimes finds herself being manipulated by its mood swings. Marnie and Marii both derive from the prefix mal, meaning bad. They may also derive from Rosmarnius, following the plant theming with names. Marnie is first met in Motostoke's Budew Drop Inn, quelling a few disruptive Team Yell members with her presence. After apologizing to the player character, she attends the opening ceremony of the Gym Challenge. She later meets up with the player character at the same location prior to the third Gym Challenge, where she challenges them to a battle. Upon her defeat, Marnie notes that she has a long way to go. Continuing her Gym Challenge, Marnie eventually runs into the player character again outside of Spikemuth, which is being blocked off by Team Yell. At this point, Marnie is on friendly terms with the player character, so she shows them a secret entrance into the town after she is defeated in battle once again. She helps the player character advance, and in a rare display of emotion, she explosively berates some Team Yell Grunts for obstructing the Gym Challenge. Later, after Piers (Marnie's brother and the seventh Gym Leader) is defeated, it becomes Marnie's turn to fight him. Although a caring sister, Marnie scolds Piers for suggesting that she should be the new Gym Leader and states that she has her ambitions set on the championship instead. However, when the player character crushes her dream by beating her in the semifinals of the Champion Cup, Marnie gives in and replaces Piers as the newest Gym Leader of Spikemuth. Later, the player character can barge in on Marnie attempting to train herself to smile for her fans, after which she gets shocked and runs off in embarrassment. As an opponent, Marnie can team up with Sordward, Avery, Piers or Hop. Despite becoming a Dark type Gym Leader, Marnie has one Pokémon which is not a Dark type, Toxicroak. She is the only Galarian Gym Leader to have a Pokémon that doesn't match her specialty.

arnie's Gym Leader League Card.

“ She was appointed as the new Gym Leader of Spikemuth by her brother Piers. Piers caught Morpeko and gave it to her when she was five. She still finds herself at the mercy of Morpeko's mood swings even now. The local dialect of Spikemuth has a distinct kick to it, and many of Marnie's fans have started mimicking her. Marnie won't change her expression even when she gets angry, but once she's set off, she stays angry for a long time. ”

This team is used in two situations:

In Spikemuth, where she has daily rematches, she does not Gigantamax her Grimmsnarl.
Grimmsnarl is not always her last Pokémon to send out.
During the Champion Cup rematch, in which she Gigantamaxes her Grimmsnarl the first turn after it is sent to battle.

Trivia
Marnie's partner, Morpeko, is a hint to her hidden nature, as it can switch between two different forms.
Marnie's hair also slightly resembles Morpeko's ear tufts.
Marnie appears to share many similarities with Gladion:
Both are pale skinned with green eyes.
Both of their outfits are mainly black.
Both have piercings or clips on their left ears.
Both have bangs covering or partly covering their right eyes.
Both have their hair shaved on one side with a ripped pattern.
Both have a connection to their region's villainous team but are not an actual member.
Her uniform number 960 stands for 苦労 (kurou), meaning hardship. It may also derive from the Japanese term for black, kuro.
Despite becoming a Dark type Gym Leader, Marnie has one Pokémon which is not a Dark type, Toxicroak. She is the only Galarian Gym Leader to have a Pokémon that doesn't match her specialty.
However, starting in Generation VIII, Poison-type Pokémon are classified as Dark types in the Pokémon TCG, similarly to how Ice types are classified as Water types and Flying types are classified as Normal types (they were classified as Grass type from Generation 1 to Generation 3 and Psychic type from Generation 4 to Generation 7).
Starting in Generation IX, Marnie now shares this feature with the Paldean Gym Leaders, although the latter use the Terastal Phenomenon on the non-specialty Pokémon to add their specialty typing onto them.
Like with some other characters (Chairman Rose being an example), Marnie's hair and outfit became available in the Isle of Armor.
